Left on the original front (garden) side of the house is the extruding hexagonal tower with stone spiral staircase. interwhite

The ornamental-structural element under the roof at the tower’s corner is symmetrical, but at the backside it is eaten by the attic of a neighboring house which was constructed later. interwhite

EXTERIOR SPACES

RdC / façade
The sign over the main entrance door indicates the ancient function of this locale: a café, of which the 1907 phone directory still counted 26 in the village... Some three to four remain today. No one we meet remembers to have seen this particular one in business. The lettering style suggests some hundred years might have passed since. Another café remnant is the large vaulted wine cellar, where wine was actually produced in stone basins and stored in oak barrels.

What kind of building existed here before the caféone can only guess. The tower is oversized for the kind of habitation and the stone staircase once used to also access the house next door. But the passages have been walled up in natural stone and chalk, in early times. The nearby church and chapel and the important religious past of Tannay could well have encompassed this part of the center: the ancient bourg.
